The Pros Of Protein…

So, what are the pros of protein…

Your body uses protein to build and repair tissues. You need protein every single day to keep your metabolism running, energy and blood sugar levels stable, and help prevent weight gain. Protein makes you feel full and requires more work for the body to digest than refined carbohydrates. Protein is a vital brain food allowing better brain function and let’s face it- we could all do with more of that!

So where can protein be found and are some better than others?! Protein comes from two different sources: animal and plant based foods. The highest are from meat, dairy, eggs and fish as well as soy, nuts, legumes and grains. Yes, some high-protein foods are healthier than others because of what comes with the protein, such as healthy fats or harmful ones, hidden salt or beneficial fibre

One thing for sure is that you should not rely on processed meat (sausages, bacon, ham) or full fat dairy and fast food for your source of protein as these contain saturated fat and so should be limited. Instead replace with healthier protein alternatives from the likes of fish, skinless chicken, eggs, lean cuts of meat and nuts, beans and pulses.

Benefits:

Less hungry – so fewer calorie intake.

Better bone density – less risk of osteoporosis.

Vital brain food – better brain function.

Lower blood pressure – known to reduce blood pressure in those with hypertension.

Lose fat – you lose more fat and less muscle on a high protein diet.
